San Antonio's new hospital for women and children opens

The new University Health Women's and Children's Hospital is officially open after a long and meticulous morning of moving on Tuesday.

Why it matters: The new hospital offers specialized, regional care in one location — the first in South Texas to do so.

What they did: Hospital staff spent months coordinating a transfer plan that would get all patients moved from the original University Hospital to the neighboring new facility safely.

Staff started the move at 2am Tuesday with the NICU babies, followed by pediatric patients, then expectant mothers.
The children's emergency department was set to open at 5am but got its first patients when the marquee switched on at 4:30am.

What's next: Mothers-to-be and hospital staff are waiting to see who will be the first baby born in the hospital.
